Otology

Otology is a sub-specialty within the specialty of an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician and it is the branch of medicine that focuses on the structure and function of the ear treating disorders of the external, middle, and inner ear. The field of otology was born in 1829 at The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary with the first documented treatment of diseases of the ear. Since then, the field of otology has expanded to include treatment and surgery of the adjacent structures related to the ear known as neurotology.
